THE FOLLOWING morning Joel sat in the clearing with the wolf under his palm, thinking what an extraordinary man Guy must’ve been to keep it together. How hard it must’ve been to survive and make a home for him and the wolf. He realized then the week of paradise he had enjoyed with the wolf was due to Guy. He had kept himself hidden, but the jobs he’d done in the night were staggering.

Guy had chopped wood, kept the fire going, and prepared his meals; he’d washed and dried his clothing, and folded it neatly at the end of the sofa for the next new day. He even ensured Joel woke with a mug of water to quench his parched throat.

Guy had taken care of him, and Joel repaid him by arguing and being ungrateful.

Joel had fractured Guy and the wolf’s peace, and he didn’t know how to make it better. He’d agreed to the seven days, yet at the end of it, he pushed Guy, prodded him when it was obvious he was weakened.

The wolf lifted his head, ears twitching. He stood, trotting away from where they had curled up together.

Joel glanced toward him with a frown. The wolf darted a look back but kept going deeper into the trees.

Joel assumed he was off on his hunt, would return with a display of birds Joel could only stare at.

He lay down on his side, watching the damp ash before him with dozy eyes.
